LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL
LEE WOODARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
UPDATED 9/1/15
Mission Statement
The mission of the Lee Woodard Elementary School library, in accordance with the missions of Lee Woodard Elementary and Wilson County Schools, is to prepare students to be successful, information savvy 21st century citizens. This is achieved by:
Library Schedule
Lee Woodard Elementary School Library currently follows a combination of the fixed-flexible schedule. A fixed schedule is designed so that the students of each classroom see the librarian at a set time at least once a week. A flexible schedule is an open schedule that provides ongoing opportunities for collaboration between the Teacher Librarian and the Classroom Teacher based on need. The benefits of the integration between information skills and content area subject matter, provided by a flexible schedule, are numerous, often resulting in greater educational gains on the part of the students. At present, the Teacher Librarian follows a fixed schedule four days of the week (Monday-Wednesday, Friday) and a flexible schedule one day of the week (Thursday).
For more information, please refer to the detailed schedule on page 4 of this document.
Library Curriculum
The Lee Woodard Elementary School library curriculum is driven by North Carolina’s Information and Technology Standards for grades K-5: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/standards/new-standards/info-technology/gradek.pdf, as well as The American Association of School Librarians’ Standards for the 21st Century Learner: http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/guidelinesandstandards/learningstandards/AASL_LearningStandards.pdf . Technology skills are integrated throughout the curriculum at all levels.
Collaboration Efforts
Teachers are encouraged to collaborate with the Teacher Librarian on lessons/projects that expand upon their classroom lessons and enhance the overall learning gains of the students. Collaboration involves equal input and effort by both or all parties involved and ongoing and equal representation of all parties throughout the lesson’s/project’s process. If interested in finding a time to collaborate, please give at least a week’s notice to the librarian. The best way to express this interest would be to send the librarian an email giving content topic specifics and desired goals and outcomes for the possible collaboration.
Circulation Guidelines
All materials purchased and available for use through Lee Woodard Elementary School Library are intended to support the curriculum and encourage a love of reading, as well as an aptitude for lifelong learning.
Students
Checkout Guidelines
Students will be responsible for using their own library sticks to check out books each week. Students are allowed to check out books for one week at a time either during their designated library class time or as the librarian is available on Thursdays. The following table shows how many books a student is allowed to check out, based on their grade level.
Grade - K-1st
Number of Books - 1
Length of Time - 7 days
Renewal - 1
Grade - 2nd-5th
Number of Books - 2
Length of Time - 7 days
Renewal - 1
The maximum number of books a student can have out at one time is 2 books. This is a slight change from last year’s policy. However, given that students come to the library once a week, two books is sufficient for most students and should reduce the number of lost and damaged items that occur throughout the year. Again, for those students for whom two books in a week is not enough, Thursday provides open library time during which students can come get more books, at the permission of their teachers.
Check-in Procedures
Student books are to be returned to the library during their designated library time, with the exception of Thursdays. Students are asked to have their books in their hands as they come into the library and to hold onto them during class. Once instructed, students will be expected to check in their own books and put them on the correct check-in cart. The designated check-in station is located near the EASY section of the library.
Overdue and Lost/Damaged Items
Students with overdue books or lost/damaged items showing on their accounts, even from previous schools, will not be allowed to check out new items until the items are returned or paid for. They may, however, select a paperback book from the designated cart to read during checkout time.
If a student loses or damages a book, they will be responsible for paying for the cost of that book (as recorded in the Destiny system) in order to clear their account. Students and parents can contact the librarian in order to find out how much a student owes for an item(s). In most cases, the librarian will accept a good condition, replacement copy in lieu of payment for the book. However, it is important to speak with the librarian about this before purchasing a replacement.
In order to keep parents informed, overdue notices will be sent out by request and every 4.5 weeks with progress reports and report cards.
